What is a relay?

A relay is an electromechanical component that is widely used in electrical circuit technology. It acts as a switch that is controlled by electrical signals. A relay opens or closes an electrical circuit. The mode of operation is therefore based on the use of electromagnetic forces that enable the switching process.

Design and functional principle

A relay typically consists of a coil, a mechanical armature, contact springs and fixed contacts. The armature drives the contact springs.

When electric current flows through the coil, a magnetic field is generated. This attracts the armature. The mechanical connection with the contact spring ensures that the relay contacts close or open. This process safely separates control and load circuits so that small electrical signals can be used to control larger currents.

Relays can therefore be a crucial component in control systems for switching system components on and off.

Our relay series according to IEC 61810-3 with forcibly guided contacts vary in terms of contact configuration, switching current range, coil voltage, design and application areas. The product range includes relays for switching currents from 3 mA to 16 A. For higher loads, we recommend our SLR and SIR series.

The versatile SIP-6 series is particularly suitable for 3-phase applications and high coil voltages up to 220 VDC.
Compact systems such as the SID4 series, SISF, the SIS series or the extremely flat SIF series are suitable for robotics, medical technology and sensor technology, among others.
