Optical encoder EOI R007 by ELESTA in 7mm miniature housing

ELESTA GmbH has added a 3-channel optical encoder in an aluminium housing to its product portfolio of miniature encoders. With a length of 13mm and a diameter of 7 mm, it is one of the smallest encoders of this type which is currently on the market.

Equipped with 2 precision ball bearings it guarantees high smooth running and a long service life at speeds of up to 80,000 rpm.

In the housing is the patented encoder system of the EOI R by ELESTA. The integrated system operates on the basis of a new optical focussing incident light method. Reflective parabolic shaped concave mirror segments form the code segments of the code wheel. The resulting concentration and reflection of the light of the transmitter LED allows for the light source to only emit very little light to still ensure very steep signal edges and a high resolution even at high speeds. The encoder delivers 128 pulses at any rotation speed to two outputs that are phase shifted by 90°. The third channel provides one index pulse per revolution. The signal quality and accuracy across the entire speed range is very exact.

Due to the design of the encoder it operates with 4 mA current at a voltage of 5 V and is therefore also interesting for battery-powered applications. The housing is mounted by grub screws and securely braced against rotation. Coupling of the encoder with commercial clutch elements for connection to motors, gearboxes or the like are just as straightforward as the adaptation of potentiometer knobs with clamps or fixing screw. The chamfered output shaft has a diameter of 2 mm and is flattened at two sides.

The encoder housing also serves for preliminary evaluation of individual solutions in which the encoder system should be integrated in customer-specific systems or housing. Extensive design-in support is also available.
